Devils Rejects Cake

So, my sister called me one day saying she wanted to get a cake made for one of her good friend’s birthday! I asked what his interests were and she told me that he loves the movie, “The Devil’s Rejects” so since Captain Spaulding is a key point character, not to mention creepy/wild looking we went with him as the focal point of the cake. The cake itself was half chocolate, and half vanilla with vanilla frosting. The stripes are fondant, and the Captain himself is a butter-cream transfer. I really, really love how clean he came out, and pretty proud of myself considering how much detail he has, plus my sister really wanted me to “capture the crazy in his eyes” so, I did my best to do just that. Instead of just having the typical “Happy Birthday” I went with “Happy Tutti F#@!& Fruity Birthday” which really just adds to the theme of the cake itself.

I was extremely happy with how it turned out, and not to mention this was my first crime/thiller inspired order! So when I get to step outside of the box with ideas, and designs it’s always an exciting process! From what I was told he was super happy with the cake and he had a great birthday! To any of you Rob Zombie, or Devil’s Rejects fans I hope I made you proud! 🙂

Roger Rabbit Birthday Cakes – June 2014

I was very honored when I was contacted to make not one, but two cakes for a little boy’s first birthday party! not only was it the fact that I got to make two cakes, but they are Roger Rabbit themed cakes! How fun is that? I really stepped my game up this the big one above, I used RKT (rice krispie treat) for the cartoon buildings and first covered them in chocolate and fondant afterwards. The cake is half chocolate, half vanilla. Covered in vanilla icing, and everything on this cake was edible except the lamppost.

Roger himself was a cake topper provided by the client, which really just made the cake perfect!

The second cake was for the kid to dig into himself, so that’s why I covered it in only icing, with roger being the only fondant accents. That way he could really dig his fingers into it! This cake was red velvet (one of my favorite recipes) with vanilla icing tinted blue. I had a blast making these cakes, not only did it make me step out of my comfort zone, but the fact that I was the one they asked to help make his first birthday just a little extra special was a blessing all in itself! The client was very happy with how they turned out, and I can only hope everyone else enjoyed it too!

High School Graduation Cake – May 2014

For a high school graduation in my hometown, I got to make a two layer, chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. I made a buttercream transfer for the school logo, and I was really happy with how it turned out. Especially considering I’ve only done a couple of transfers and this one had a lot more detail to it. But, I am definitely more comfortable with working with them 🙂 

I used a 50/50 shortening, and butter-cream recipe so it was able to become a little stiffer then the other icings I’ve used for them. I was very happy with how it turned out, especially since it wasn’t a ton of notice. 🙂 

Congrats to any, and all graduates that got to walk across a stage!

NASA Moon Birthday Cake – April 2013

For a special little boy’s 5th birthday party, I created an out of this world moon cake, featuring a few astronauts, and of course an alien.  🙂  It’s a simple multiple layer chocolate cake, covered in vanilla frosting tinted grey. All made from scratch of course! The board is covered in fondant, featuring some stars, and edible luster spray to give it a little extra shine. I had a blast making this for the party, and it seemed to be a big hit!!

Cucumber Birthday Cake – April 2014

My manager’s birthday was coming up, and so that means a cake was in order. For his birthday I made a cucumber cake, inspired by Veggie Tales! He’s sporting a name tag, and Burberry inspired tie. It was a vanilla cake, dyed green, covered with vanilla frosting. The cake itself was an inside joke but he very much enjoyed it 🙂  A simple, yet fun cake for both myself to make, and for the entertainment of everyone else!

A present for my mother’s birthday! – 2013

My mother’s birthday is technically on Monday, but because of me living out of town, and work (you know, life stuff) we decided to celebrate it this weekend. So for her (early) birthday I decided to bake her a “present” it’s a vanilla cake with decorator’s butter-cream, and satin ice fondant. This was my first time covering a cake completely in fondant, so it was an interesting trial. The ribbon was probably the hardest part for me, I had some issues with cracking, but it wasn’t to where it was falling apart. I used a pizza cutter to cut out the tag, and used a gourmet food writer for the dots, and “Happy Birthday” overall I’m happy with how it came out, and my mom loved it! So that made all worth while (:

My very first commissioned order!

This past February I received my very first order! 2 dozen mini cupcakes, and 3 different cookies styles. The cupcakes were chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. All with different icing, and toppings, as well as design. The cookie styles were, “You melt my heart cookies” with a semi-melted heart marshmallow on top. “Half and Half” heart cookies, red frosting on one side, white on the other, and I used a toothpick to intertwine the two. The last, “Half dipped heart cookies” were you simply dip half of the cookie in melted chocolate. It was a blast, and she was very pleased. Not to mention I bought all the ingredients and baked, and decorated them all within less then 2 days. That includes the packaging and presentation. I was very happy with my work 🙂 Not to mention, extremely grateful for the opportunity!
